To sum up the computer saga

The hard drive was too dead to get anything off of it. Really all I've lost is the pictures I've taken since I got to Spain (and I have so-so to good copies of a few of them). Everything else got backed up before I left home.

What I find really annoying, though, is the fact that I will be doing without most of my iTunes library for the next three months.


. . . and Spain seems to not believe in cheap, portable surge protectors. So far everything I've seen costs between 80 and 120 euros, and is Very Large.

Could you have a US surge protector sent from home, and plug it in through a power converter?

We're looking into that. The two problems with that are: the voltage or something is different here, and I can't use the transformer that I use to charge my camera batteries because it's not to be used with computers. So I need to find something that can handle the different voltage. And then there's the issue of grounding. Surge protectors apparently need to be grounded to work. And none of my adapter plugs have a third prong. I'm not even entirely sure that the outlets here are grounded.

Hm, I wonder if Tonje knows; I think that Norwegian outlets use the same plugs as Spanish ones.
