Shall we dance?
2 May 2010 07:57 amHey,
There's a free contra dance at Hampshire tonight. Is anyone interested in going?
Contra dancing is a lot of fun, and not terribly difficult. It's a partner dance, but you wind up dancing with everyone anyway (You know the dancing they do in Pride and Prejudice? Contra dancing is the same basic idea, only modern contra dance is a bit livelier. More dancing and less walking, so it's not awkward and there isn't any of this I-will-be-a-wilting-flower-on-the-wall-until-someone-asks-me-to-dance. Here, go look at this video. But don't be intimidated. It's not hard to learn, and they walk you through the steps a couple of times before the actual dancing starts. And yes, couples are not always heteronormative, and yes, that guy was wearing a skirt. Contra dance people are lots of fun. Or hey, this one's the one I go to at home. I've danced with some of those people.
. . . okay, now I really want to go dancing.
The dance is from 7:30 to 10:30, and I'm thinking that I'll probably take the 39 at 6:40 from Smith to get to Hampshire at 7, and then leave Hampshire at 10:15 (and get back to Smith at 10:35).
This is something that I really enjoy, and I would love to share it with people. Anyone game?
(If you're coming, wear comfortable shoes, preferably something slippery enough that you can spin in them but with enough traction that you can dance. I recommend bringing a flowy skirt; it's more fun that way.)
