3rdragon: (Default)
I was heating broth for the soup I'm making for tonight when I heard a soft thwop. Reviewing my peripheral vision for the past second or so, I realized that a silver-gray sectioned creature with far too many legs had just landed on the floor (apparently from a point about four feet in the air, but I decided that it must have fallen from something higher, and I'd only noticed it at that point). I stared at it, awkwardly holding the pan lid and the wooden spoon, wishing that I were wearing shoes so I could squash it (while I generally have no qualms about killing bugs with my bare hands, there's something about stepping on them with bare feet that makes me squemish, and I think that in this case I would have wanted a tissue or piece of paper or something to go after this one even with my hands).
And as I stood there and stared at it, it scuttled under the kitchen cabinets and was gone, leaving me with a sense of uhg and of too many legs. Looking around, I realized that it must have fallen out of the light fixture in the ceiling, because there wasn't anywhere else for it to have come from.
I'm usually okay with bugs, insects, arachnids, etc (I used to be a counselor at a camp that took kids to the insectarium), but something about that one left me with a lingering frisson of revulsion. I think it was something to do with the falling-out-of-the-air. Crawling bugs belong on the ground. Only bugs with wings belong in the air.
And it was so near the food - the chicken was on that counter!
