I have a problem,

And this problem is that my library hours have gotten too popular.

My library hours are Order of the Phoenix - writing club. I've always intended them to be a quiet space for people to do writing or academic work. For the past two weeks there have been lots of people and lots of noise and I've gotten very little work done. I don't work particularly well when there's lots of stuff going on, and I don't think that most of the other people present are getting much work done, either.

I don't want to be a tyrant and enforce silence in my library hours, or say that everyone has to be writing, but the fact is that my library hours have gotten so exuberant that they don't really accomplish their original purpose any more. I don't have so many hours in my week that I can spend two of them feeling frustrated because I didn't accomplish the things that I wanted to get done.

Probably the long-term solution is to not have evening library hours, but this is literally the only time I reliably have free this semester, so I can't exactly change them.

Suggestions?

Could you say that the main room is for people who are going to be writing and stuffs and others can hang out in the other room?

There was a game going on in the other room.

I do think it would be okay for you to tell people to STFU or GTFO, really. I wouldn't have taken it personally.

Yeah, have a Secret Quiet Zone. Put a sign up, don't say anything, and sneak over there.

Are the others talking about writing or are they talking about other things? I think you would be perfectly within your rights to ask that your library hours - especially if they were always for the writing club - be used for writing. If that doesn't work or feel appropriate, remember that the SSFFS library while a social space is, well, a library.

And rooms can be used for socializing just fine. We did fine without the Library while I was in SSFFS: we didn't HAVE the functional library and happy space you have now. (Did I just sound old geezerish? I hope not).

And if anyone gives you crap about it, simply tell me and I'll give them a few pointers. Possibly with something pointy. Heaven forbid I have to haul my arce up to Massachusetts and beat them with a copy of the DMG.

I have to admit, it IS a bit of a trek, and I'm sure you do have plenty of pointy-wielding allies closer. ^_^. Although, I could always use some stress relief.

Ganbatte!
