The third book is still focused on reading. Very few of the pieces come with bylines. Still, it's taking on the aspect of the later readers, with the focus on good readings, edifying and instruction.

May be chiefly of interest in view of what they selected in the era.

Sanders' young ladies' reader : embracing a comprehensive course of instruction in the principles of rhetorical reading : with a choice collection of exercises in reading, both in prose and poetry, for the use of the higher female seminaries, as also, the higher classes in female schools generally by Charles W. Sanders

A selection of prose and poetry intended for elocution classes. Interesting, nowadays, chiefly for the selections choosing. With an eye to variety, the preface assures us, because they are intended for the young.

This one is, unlike the fourth and fifth readers, aimed specifically at girls. Which means a couple on the education of women and the necessity of its being for their whole lives, and not the flurry of society to win their husbands, and more female characters in the stories. It has a couple of selections that overlap with those readers.

Weird Japanese Horror Films

Hello again (thanks for the collective 'you should probably re-consider this' last time because I kind of needed that), I've got some more weirdly specific questions that I kind of am not sure how to begin tackling:

So one of my characters is a Japanese man who sort of has a thing for schlocky pulpy horror movies, and while I'm aware of some popular-ish examples of sort of cult horror films in Japan ( Like House (1977) or Tetsuo The Iron Man (1989) which vaguely fit his themes of 'being deeply uncomfortable with the world and his body') but these always struck me as kind of obvious and well known even outside of japan and not something someone who was really into weird stuff would actually select as a 'favorite'. For the sake of clarity: this is set in the present so even relatively recent films are okay.

I guess in general I'm looking for recommendations for stuff this sort of guy would be interested in, or at least something that someone who's a bit of a weird horror junkie would consider a personal favorite.

there's a pond with lots of frogs at my job and on my breaks I walk the perimeter and every couple steps I hear a croak and a sploosh and see one swim away. not this guy though, he wasn't scared of me at all :)

Agate Beach

Our next travel stop was the Newport area and our hotel at Agate Beach. There was some fog the day we arrived but the next day dawned completely clear, giving us great views of the nearby lighthouse.

The School Reader, Fifth Book: Designed As A Sequel To Sanders' Fourth Reader by Charles Walton Sanders

An 1859 book presenting texts for elocution classes. Probably mostly of interest for the selections, chosen for the edification of the young as well as the elocution -- and to keep them interested. Often has several selections on the same topic. For instance, at one point, the condor. Eulogies on Thomas Jefferson and John Adams -- both, considering their common death date -- and on John Quincy Adams. Among many other topics.
